Should I Repair or Replace My Furnace?

In today’s economy, it’s important that we get the most out of what we have, and a new heating system is certainly a big investment.

So, how do you know if it’s better to purchase a new heating system or repair the one you have?

Here are a few things to consider that may offer some help:

  • How often does your furnace break down? If it’s just an occasional problem, you may want to hang in there and repair it. However, if it breaks down a lot, it may be time for a new furnace.
  • How old is your furnace? A new energy efficient furnace will save you money. If your furnace is more than 15 years old, it may be time to invest in a newer model.
  • Do you supplement your heat by burning wood?  If you use a wood burning fireplace as a way to keep costs down, this may extend the life of your furnace.
  • Are there rooms in your home that are too hot or too cold?  If so, this could be a sign that your equipment is not working properly.
  • Is the air in your home too dry?  If so, you may have a humidity problem, which could be caused by an inefficient system or leaky duct work.

Still unsure whether you should buy a new furnace?  No problem.  We are here to help you.  Please call our Buffalo Heating Experts at  681-0100.  We would be happy to answer your questions.

The Federal Energy Tax Credit Ends December 31, 2010

Emerald Heating and Cooling would like to remind you that the Federal Energy Tax Credit ends on December 31, 2010.

Under the Federal tax credit program, homeowners can receive Federal income tax credit up to 30 percent of the cost of materials up to $1,500 per appliance installed in your home. New construction and rental property do not qualify.

According to the EnergyStar website, your energy efficient appliance must be purchased and installed before the end of 2010. Please note, when filing your taxes in April, you will need to complete IRS Form 5695.  Be sure to include the manufacturer’s certification statement as well.

If you are unsure if your product qualifies for this tax credit, we encourage you to contact our Buffalo heating experts.
